J.R.R. Tolkien urodził się w angielskiej rodzinie w 1892 jako syn bankiera Arthura Tolkiena i jego żony Mabel Suffield. Przyszedł na świat w Bloemfontein w Wolnym Państwie Oranii (obecnie Południowa Afryka), gdzie jego ojciec był urzędnikiem (od 1890 kierownikiem) w filii Bank of Africa.
